“Migraines”
It is estimated that there are 190,000 migraine attacks experienced every day in England and 6 million people suffer from migraine in the UK. It’s estimated that people in the UK lose 25 million days of work each year through migraine attacks. This is not a rare phenomenon and the disorder is only increasing throughout the population regardless of age or gender.
According to the International Headache Society , migraine is primarily a headache disorder manifesting as recurring attacks usually lasting for 4–72 hours involving throbbing head pain of moderate to severe intensity. It is often accompanied by nausea, sometimes vomiting, sensitivity to light, sensitivity to sound, and/or other sensory stimuli. Some people can have warning symptoms called an aura, before the start of a headache. Factors that can trigger attacks in people susceptible to migraines include stress, change in sleep pattern and/or hormones, overtiredness, consumption of caffeine or alcohol, diet, tobacco, medications, strong scents and odours, climatic conditions and use of technology screens.
Chronic migraine is defined as the occurrence of headaches on 15 days or more per month (where there is no medication overuse) and where the headaches are not attributable to another causative disorder.
So what can be done to manage this condition? Join Dr Elisabeth Philipps as she explores ways to manage migraine conditions using a functional medicine approach.
Specifically Elisabeth will discuss:
• Underlying causes of migraines as a way to understand a cohesive integrated treatment programme
• Link between diet, nervous system, hormones and circadian rhythms in migraine attacks
• Approaches to managing migraines from diet, supplementary nutrients and biofeedback
