There are believed to be around 4 million people in the UK that may be living with iron deficiency anaemia. Symptoms are easily missed especially with our busy lives. Insomnia, irritability, fatigue, hair loss, pale or clammy skin and heart palpations are some of the major symptoms of this type of anaemia, which is also significantly impacts patients with chronic kidney disease, heart failure and gastrointestinal diseases like Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis.
Dietary sources of iron and functionality of the gut play a key role in anaemia, with those following vegetarian and vegan diets, as well as some women in their pregnancy, children and teenagers needing to take extra precautions to ensure optimal iron levels.
But iron deficiency isn’t the only cause of anaemia. In fact, there are over 400 different types of anaemia affecting an estimated 25% of the world’s population and 47% pre-school children developing a type of this red blood cell disorder.
Auto-immunity can be a key factor in developing a certain type of anaemia: Pernicious anaemia occurs as part of an autoimmune condition that prevents absorption of Vitamin B12 in the gut related in part to insufficient levels of Intrinsic Factor in the stomach. This type of anaemia therefore has different origins so simply supplementing with iron will not help and may even be harmful.
