Description – Perimenopause and menopause are natural stages of every woman’s life: A time of life for women to celebrate and not fear. After all perimenopause is a natural state not a disease to be “cured”! However, the hormone fluctuations and resulting changes during these years often produce challenges in mental, physical and emotional health. During this time, many women experience changes in metabolism, increased body fat, especially around the abdomen, and challenges with energy levels.
And whilst women may experience similar symptoms and changes, the experience of perimenopause is unique to each individual. Which is why support in the form of a functional medicine programme, emphasising individualised care that addresses the person-specific underlying causes of weight changes and other symptoms experienced during this transitional phase, is such a powerful ally.
During this Nutrihub webinar Dr Elisabeth Philipps will discuss functional medicine approaches to tailoring individual health plans for weight changes that may be experienced in perimenopause. We will:
- Investigate the latest research into the underlying physical, biochemical and emotional factors involved in perimenopause weight gain.
- Address hormonal balance and the importance of assessing oestrogen, progesterone, and cortisol levels in controlling blood sugar and fat deposition.
- Explore the role of gut microbiome, inflammation and weight gain looking at personalised dietary plans including anti-inflammatory foods, healthy fats, and adequate protein to promote and healthy gut microbiome, satiety and sustainable energy levels.
- Implement lifestyle modifications such as incorporating regular physical activity, stress management techniques and how to achieve quality sleep – all critical components that influence hormonal balance and weight management.
The functional medicine approach to perimenopause and weight management recognises that this phase is not just about managing symptoms but also about creating a foundation for long-term health. By focusing on the interconnectedness of hormones, nutrition, lifestyle, and emotional well-being, this approach aims to promote balance and vitality during perimenopause and beyond.
