A recent Age UK survey found that the majority of aged 50-64 year old survey group were fearful of developing dementia. The common perception is:

“People are staying physically healthy longer but not mentally healthy. In the past what happened was you died at the age your body wore out. Now what happens is that your body doesn’t wear out, but your brain does.”

Cognitive health — the ability to clearly think, learn, and remember — is an essential component of performing everyday activities and enjoying a high quality of life with advancing years. But contrary to popular belief, cognitive decline is NOT a normal part of ageing. It’s a sign that extra load and “wear and tear” are contributing to the normal function of the brain. In fact, dementia and mild cognitive impairment are relatively rare; most older people do not develop dementia. Current estimates suggest that fewer than one in five people over the age of 80 have dementia (Age UK) with factors such as genetics and IQ all playing a role.

We now know that there are plenty of modifiable lifestyle choices that keep the brain healthy, along with the body as we age. In fact, research shows that 30-50% of the risk for developing dementia is attributed to our lifestyle choices such as by improving physical activity, diet, weight, blood pressure, mood, stress levels and social connections.

Dr Elisabeth Philipps, clinical neuroscientist, will delve into the subject of healthy brain ageing to dispel some myths around cognitive decline and put in place an integrative medicine approach to supporting brain health.

In this webinar Elisabeth will cover:

  • Cognitive impairment variabilities in populations and individuals
  • Exploring factors that accelerate cognitive decline including inflammation, oxidative stress gut health, toxins, insulin resistance, and sleep quality
  • Functional medicine approach to health brain ageing addressing diet and lifestyle
  • The role of targeted nutrients and supplements in supporting brain health
